Abhishek Varman’s Kalank has undoubtedly been the most highly-anticipated film of this quarter. Starring Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit, this one is a true blue magnum opus. The makers have been treating the audience, fans, cinema-lovers and the trade with glimpses of what’s in store for them. And we must say that the magnitude at which the film has been mounted left everyone awed and eager for more! With the film out now, our reviewer – Aakanksha Naval-Shetye caught the first day, first show. And by the first half, she was blown away by the period drama. Kalank was magical, mesmerising, highly-charged, impactful and gripping on the big screen!

Reviewing Kalank‘s first half, Aakanksha mentions, “It is 1946, Husnabad (outside Lahore) and the movie opens with Roop (Alia) and Dev (Aditya) trying to board the train leaving for India, while violent riots in the backdrop reflect the ongoing turmoil. The film then goes back in flashback to 1944 ,where we are taken into the world of its lead characters. The film is gripping right from the first frame and fifteen minutes into it, you are hooked. The characters are impactful and well cast. The sets are grand, but it is the characters that are larger than life. Set in the highly charged backdrop of the pre-partition india, the political upheaval defines the characters.”

Revealing further, Aakanksha adds, “A sick Satya (Sonakshi) gets Roop married to her own husband Dev, so that he will have a spouse after her death. Zafar (Varun) is an ironsmith and lives in the infamous Heera Mandi, which also houses the popular courtesan Bahar Begum (Madhuri). Zafar is an illegitimate child and his angst is born out of being referred to as a bastard child. Balraj (Sanjay Dutt) runs a newspaper and he and his son Dev clearly don’t agree on their political views.”

Kalank is intense and each character conveys their inner turmoil beautifully. Matched with the grandeur, the film is a visual and cinematic treat. So far it’s got style and backed with strong substance. You want to know how each character plays out. The storyline is very well drafted and the metaphors translate well. Sonakshi is a scene stealer matched with the earnest rebellious nature of Alia in stark contrast. Madhuri is classy in her expressions and conveys an ache harboured over years. Kalank‘s music is amazing and lives up to the expectations. The highlight is the intense chemistry between characters that just draws you in,” expresses our reviewer.

But what’s her verdict of Kalank‘s first half? Aakanksha mentions, “The complex relationships and emotions interweaving through the situations the characters find themselves in, has been sensitively handled. The dialogues make an impact each time. The film has been getting it right on all counts till the interval and we can’t wait to see how the second half unfolds.” Well, that’s what Aakanksha experienced in the first half, what did you feel?
