The film is a biopic on legendary classical Hindustani singer Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande, who can be termed as a non-conformist, who lived life on his terms. The film traces the events that shaped his life and his music, with special emphasis on his very unique bond with writer Pu.La. Deshpande. It also underlines how he became a force to reckon with after his performance in stage-play Katyaar Kaljaat Ghusli.

Upendra Sidhaye and Nipun Avinash Dharmadhikari’s story is based on known and lesser-known incidents from Vasantrao Deshpande’s life, beginning from his childhood. Though the film abounds with lilting and catchy classical music, it must be also mentioned that the youth today may not find the excessive number of classical songs to their liking, as there are as many as 22 songs in the film, hold your breath. However, the drama and twists and turns are interesting enough to keep them involved and engrossed. Dialogues, penned by the duo, are brilliant.

Director Nipun Avinash Dharmadhikari has extracted brilliant performances from each and every actor in the film. As far as performances go, I’d say that Rahul Deshpande excels in the title role, though it is his debut film as an actor and plays the part of his own grandfather aptly. Anita Date does an able job as Vasantrao’s mother, Radha. Pushkaraj Chirputkar is wonderful in the role of P.L. Deshpande and his comedy is also cute.

Kaumudi Walokar is good as Vasantrao’s wife, Vimal. Amey Wagh makes his presence felt in a brief role as Master Dinanath Mangeshkar. Kumud Mishra is superb as Khan Saab and leaves a big impact though his role is small. Alok Rajwade has his own high moments as Vasantrao’s maternal uncle. Yatin Karyekar lends fair support as Vasantrao’s father. Sarang Sathye (as Shankar Sapre), Arush Naad (as child Vasantrao), Gandhar Joshi (as teenager Vasantrao) and Shakuntala Nagarkar (as lavni singer) lend fair support and add to the impact of the film which is quite long with a running time of almost 3 hours.

While I should concede that Nipun Avinash Dharmadhikari’s direction is very nice, Rahul Deshpande scores not only in the title role but as music composed by him as well as Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki which is very appealing. On the whole, the film Me Vasantrao is not only brilliant but also very impressive and will be patronized by the elite.
