There’s a reason Rubaru Roshni needs to be told on the small screen and reach out to a much wider audience (it has been made in seven languages) than any theatrical release can, feel its producers Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. When you watch this slice-of-life telefilm, you can completely understand the reason why.

What’s it about? Three stories showing three incidents that have scarred multiple lives forever. Rubaru means coming face-to-face. But what happens when you come face-to-face with the very same people who have not only scarred your life but completely altered its course. Aamir Khan as the narrator takes you through the three stories, each defined by an unfortunate incident, but redefined by an emotion more powerful than hate or anger, which is forgiveness! The telefilm is about finding that strength to make peace. To say anything else would be giving away the crux that is best watched than read here.

Yay: The biggest strength lies in the objectivity with which the three incidents are addressed and shown – be it the 26/11 Taj terror attacks or the aftermath of the 1984 Sikh riots. The feature takes a long hard look at how these events shaped lives. The narrative is objectively told and it is maintained throughout. Director Svati Chakravarty needs to be applauded for her deft-handling of such sensitive issues. She manages to weave the ethos of humankind beautifully with pain and hope. There is no rush in taking us through the lives of the people involved.

Nay: While the long-drawn silences in the narrative is a plus when it comes to story-telling, it also threatens to become one of its only drawback, as the medium of TV in itself is subject to distraction.

Cine Blitz Verdict: Not your average entertainer, this one is food for soul. A must-watch for anyone who has lost someone close, has ever been hurt by somebody else’s actions or has become the cause of someone’s pain. Do watch it when it airs on January 26. But one word of advice: Keep close a box of tissues.
