It was in 1999 that the hit Hollywood thriller Cruel Intentions had released. The film that starred Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe had Selma Blair play a teenager who falls for a guy whose character has grey shades. Now ten years ahead, Selma is on the other side of the spectrum, as she now plays the mother of a teenage daughter who falls for a man with a dark past. Selma will be seen playing mother, Carol Young to Josephine Langford’s Tessa Young in Jenny Gage’s romantic film After. The film is based on Anna Todd’s best-selling novel After (2014) and also stars Peter Gallagher and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
Selma shares, “The experience (of playing Tessa Yung’s mother) is a throwback to Cruel Intentions, except I’m playing the mom instead of Christine Baranski.” The actress adds, “Carol wants so much for her daughter. Tessa is beautiful and has promise and they’ve worked really hard to get her to school. This is really a defining moment in Carol’s life and, of course, in Tessa’s life. We see her struggling with how to let her daughter be her own person.”
“I did a photo shoot with Jenny right when I was starting out. I was the first celebrity she had ever shot,” comments Blair. “Plus, I loved her movie All This Panic and even moderated a screening, so I was invited on board. I hadn’t read the books, but I immediately went and downloaded them, as billions have done. I love being a small part of something that has an energy around it and people really want to see it already.”
Talking about casting Selma Blair, the novel’s author says, “Selma Blair as Carol is my teenage dream coming true, because I loved Cruel Intentions. Selma and Jo (Josephine) not only look alike, their spirits are the same. I honestly feel like every single person in the cast is exactly who they should be, even if they are these huge movie stars.”
Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Josephine Langford, Selma Blair, Shane Paul McGhie, Samuel Larsen, Khadijha Red Thunder, Swen Temmel, Inanna Sarkis , Peter Gallagher, Jennifer Beals , Pia Mia, Meadow Williams and Dylan Arnold, After releases on May 3.
