Over the years, big budget films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year, Prabhas’ Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju have opened huge on day 1 at the domestic box office and stunned one and all. However, it was Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan that broke all the records in 2018 and surpassed each and every Hindi film (original, dubbed or otherwise) to become the highest opening-day grosser of all time. But how much did it collect on day 1? And which other film make it to the list of all- time top opening-day grossers? Well to know that and more, we listed down the top 10 openers and we were surprised to see one trend!
Each and every film that has opened to huge numbers had a superstar associated with it and was one of the most-anticipated films of the year. Most of the top 10 opening day collections, including Thugs of Hindostan‘s collection, came from holiday releases. So clearly, big ticket films releasing on holidays can guarantee you a huge opening, however, what happens post the first weekend clearly depends on the content you provide to the audience. It is important to know that there were a few exceptions as well, so non-festival releases can get you massive opening as well if the plot seems interesting.
