Lakme Fashion Week 2019: Karan Johar and Tabu turn Gaurav Gupta’s show into a magical extravaganza

Gaurav Gupta opened the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort edition of this season with Bollywood stars Karan Johar and Tabu walking the ramp for him. The show took place at the Royal Opera House and befittingly had the perfect mixture of magnificence, glamour and drama. The collection titled ‘The (Un)folding’ was Gupta’s comeback to the Mumbai runway after four long years. The collection was influenced by his signature gravity-defying patterns incorporating origami-folds and fluid structures with a lot of glitter and dazzle! He collaborated with his long-time friend and poetess, Navkirat Sodhi, who stood towering in the center of the stage – that almost made her look like she was suspended in mid-air – draped in a 20 ft. long awe-inspiring gown. She recited live poetry adding a dramatic vibe to the whole environment.

“Tabu is the most phenomenal actress we have in this country. She is an artiste who is so talented and is a timeless beauty. She is an individual, she is herself. And so is Karan. That’s why they make my perfect muses because they break rules and are living life by their own rules. They are setting new cultural definition. I resonate with that part. Karan is a powerhouse. The way he is, the kind of films he makes and his personality is perfect for a ‘Gaurav Gupta man’,” said Gaurav on having Karan and Tabu as his muses.

The show was opened by Tabu in a powder-blue gown which had intricate crystal and 3D floral work on it. The showstopper was Karan and he wore a red and black suit with oxidized spike detailing on the collar and no points for guessing that he looked totally dapper in it.

The collection consisted of splendid and voluminous silhouettes with capes, ruffles, fish cuts and bouffant-like shapes. The colour palette consisted of powder blues, greys, dusty rose pink, ivory, black, reds and yellows. The designer said that he used new techniques with chikankari and brocade for the first time and it is unfolding the new chapter for his brand. The ruffled sari-gowns looked retro-flamboyant. Rest of the collection was formed by capes and pantsuits, lehengas and evening wear. The intricate detailing and embellishments with crystals, 3D flowers and zardozi added a mystique to the collection. The make-up was perfectly complementing the garments. Red glossy lips with some red glitter, silver glitter on the eyes and the hair tied at the side in a French roll added up to the glamour quotient.

Gupta sprinkled his magic through his amazing collection on the ramp leaving us stunned. The designer has the record of making unique and significant silhouettes like no one else. He has completed 15 years in the fashion industry and we must say, his garments are undeniably timeless.
