Fashion designer Anjali Phougat: Womanhood should be celebrated all year round

Why choose just one day to celebrate the women in your life, ask’s fashion designer Anjali Phougat. She says that she has never believed in days such as Women’s Day, but adds that it surely feels nice to be made to feel special on one day!

“As I always say, I don’t believe in any specific day. Womanhood should be celebrated every day. But yes, it’s good to celebrate a bit extra and dedicate one special day during the year to women. But other than that, I believe there’s no such specific significance of this day in my life because I like to celebrate my womanhood all around the year,” she says.

She says that women are very powerful, and people need to realise that. “People talk about women empowerment, but what is actually women empowerment? Women are already empowered. Women are way stronger than men. If you compare, they can run a home, a business, or work outside. Women are leading the world. Like if you look at global international companies, IT companies, women are in big leadership roles. So, I feel that time has evolved and things have changed. Women are ruling inside the house and outside in the workplace, everywhere. They are treated equally. And maybe in some rural areas, because I live in the USA, I don’t see much discrimination on the basis of gender. There’s gender equality, but maybe still in some rural areas, there is a scope of improvement in the industry,” she says.

Ask her if she feels that men and women have equal privileges in the industry, and she says, “Women are really making their mark on the world. Just take a look at some of the biggest companies out there, like Microsoft and Apple. Also in my shows, I’ve had models and CEOs from all corners of the globe. It makes me believe that women are holding some of the highest positions of leadership, whether it’s in politics or any other field. So, I feel like there’s a good sense of equality happening.”

She adds, “Women are really tough, both in their minds and bodies. When they commit to something, they put their whole heart into it, like a mom does. They can handle running a household and working outside just as well as men, sometimes even better. The other day, my daughter told me, ‘Mom, I think girls are way stronger than boys.’ I asked her why she thought that. She gave me a really nice answer: ‘If a woman can create a new life within her, she can do anything.’ That’s pretty deep, right? It shows just how strong women are. They have endless abilities and potential. It’s pretty amazing to think about.”
