It was 1998, with the release of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji-starrer Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH), a young director rose to fame and made a huge impact on Bollywood. One of the most dynamic filmmakers, Karan Johar is a brand today with films that has defined generations. Larger-than-life, his films spell love in all its myriad forms. Be it the three friends exploring love and friendship in KKHH or three individuals dealing with the complexities of love in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Karan Johar has constantly been trying to highlight relationships beautifully. Today, as KJo celebrates his 47th birthday, we bring to you five iconic films that he has directed:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hain (KKHH):
This was his first film, with SRK and Kajol who were already established stars by then and Rani who was on the cusp of stardom! A directorial debut like no other, the film didn’t look like a first-timer’s project. The film is loved for its fresh appeal and the journey that it takes you on even today. If not KKHH and Karan Johar we would have never got our Rahul and Anjali.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G):
Actor Arjun Kapoor calls K3G his guilty pleasure and let’s just agree it is ours too. A massive ensemble film with all the biggies from the industry and Amitabh Bachchan anchoring it was a big deal. A family drama like no other K3G has everything from massive set, foreign locations, to comedy, emotions, longing and much more. Again starring SRK, Kajol, Rani, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan K3G went on to became a cult.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK):
For the lack of words, KANK is an emotion, a story of how a self-destructive person affects everyone around him. Dev and Maya are those pieces of jigsaw puzzle who are placed at the wrong places but are stuck there. KANK without a second thought has to be the best feature length film ever directed by Karan Johar. How clever of him to place the situation in New York City, as no extra marital affair can go unnoticed in India.
My Name Is Khan (MNIK):
There is no need to explain how much of SRK and Kajol mean to Karan and this collaboration gave us one of the finest films of our times MNIK. Karan Johar had stepped out of his comfort zone and excelled in it. My Name Is Khan was a journey of an autistic man who understands what love is to him thriving hard to find his identity left us all in tears.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM):
The most recent film that he directed is the Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer ADHM. Pyaar Mein Junoon Hai, Magar Dosti Mein Sukoon hai, redefining the thin line between friendship and love Karan Johar made a heartfelt project that many can still relate to. Well done KJo!
