Rakul Preet Singh talks about becoming Tanya for Runway 34, how it affected her and much more!

As an actress, this role was exciting for Rakul Preet Singh who said that what makes Runway 34 one of a kind is the fact that Bollywood hasn’t witnessed multiple films based on aviation thrillers, especially inside the cockpit, making the roles and the movie different.

Rakul Preet Singh spoke about her character ‘Captain Tanya’ in the movie Runway 34 who is a newer pilot compared to her senior, she is portrayed as extremely disciplined and works by the book. Shown in one cockpit, both Captain Vikrant and Captain Tanya have a different take on the situation which will be clearer after watching the movie, she said. All the roles, Tanya, Vikrant, and Narayan Vedant, according to her are all very beautifully written, everything from their dialogues to character and persona.

The movie, according to Rakul, depicts the turbulence one keeps going through in life, although the movie covers a length of events that happen in the air that impact both the pilots on profession and are investigated for the same. She also adds that the movie isn’t the typical masala film with a hero and heroine with music and romance. The narrative is changing, and so are her roles.

As an actress, this role was exciting for her, she also said that what makes Runway 34 one of a kind is the fact that Bollywood hasn’t witnessed multiple films based on aviation thrillers, especially inside the cockpit, making the roles and the movie different. She elaborated on her learning experience of the film stating that shooting that film had affected her ability to identify the situation of a pilot in air. She understood that they have a great responsibility for the safety of every passenger on the flight, which has made her more appreciative of their role.

Praising her co-star Ajay Devgn’s directorial brilliance she said that the enclosed space of the cockpit had several cameras and none came into the frame, also because he is an actor himself, she understands that it is difficult to recreate the panic again and again. The actress described how he  multitasked on the set as he switched his duties from an actor, to a director and a producer from time to time. She also says that Ajay was open to her for improvising the role although it was more important to him that she understood  the emotions well in order to act them out. Adding to the topic she said that in order to depict the emotion, it is important that one disconnects from the surrounding, the crew, and everyone on set and be present in the moment with their co-star.

Talking about her experience with working and sharing the screen with Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn, she said that working with them did not make her nervous, in fact was a great opportunity for her. Working with a person more experienced and better herself only brought the best of her as she spoke more about the amazing vibe, pre-punctual habits and willingness to work she observed in Amitabh Bachchan that inspired the young actress.

Discussing the waves of cinema, she said that she tried to evolve with the wave. When choosing a script, the important thing she looks for in the script is the story, not the language. The actress has done multiple scripts, in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi but what is important to her is the subject of the film, if her gut says go for it, she does it.

Opening up about her journey from her first film Yaariyan to Runway 34, she said that she was happy with all the work, but not satisfied as she pursues the sky as her limit. Work excites her and she too likes to push herself, that’s what keeps her going, if she sees the opportunity, she seizes it. The actress who has done 41 films to date pointed out Runway 34, De De Pyaar De, Dhruva, Venkatadri Express, and Theeran as some of her most liked films. Her growth in the film line came with experience, she said. One of the greatest knowledge and assets she had while setting foot in the film industry was her confidence which she believes was because of her army upbringing. Talking about her busy schedule, the actress also mentioned that she has five more films lined up, Attack, Runway, Doctor G, Thank God, and Chhatriwaali, and an untitled film with Akshay Kumar.
