A good script and a skilled artist make for complete cinematic brilliance! One such gifted actor, who added his acting prowess to the beautiful Direction of Chaitanya Tamhane’s, The Disciple , is the supremely talented actor, Aditya Modak. The actor cum musician essays the pivotal role of a musician , Sharad Nerulkar on screen.

The character of Sharad had to meet several expectations in terms of the appearance, the body language and strong presence. Director Chaitanya Tamhane decodes what went into the making of the character and casting of this sheer talented actor.

Talking about casting Aditya, Director Chaitanya Tamhane said, “Casting for this film was the biggest challenge I faced after I finished writing the script. When it came to Sharad it was also the physical and mental transformation that his character goes through. Our casting process lasted almost a year, in which we auditioned over 1800 people. I had seen some clips of Aditya Modak online and thought he would be a strong contender for playing Sharad.”

Further, decoding his craft and character, Tamhane added, Aditya also made that leap of faith without exactly knowing what he was getting into, and unquestioningly dedicated himself to the process. He immersed himself in the world of The Disciple and the character of Sharad; he underwent rigorous physical training, did acting workshops, attended music rehearsals, and religiously listened to Maai’s tapes that we had provided him. He comes from the same background and thrives in the same world as Sharad, so he understood the themes and the subtext of the film. But no amount of preparation and calculation can guarantee the magic that needs to happen on set, once the camera starts rolling. This is where Aditya really surprised me. It was as if the camera intuited his feelings and the mental processes that he was going through. His performance is truly a gift to the film, one for which I will forever be indebted to him.”

Set to release on the service on 30th April, 2021, The Disciple traces the journey of a musician Sharad Nerulkar who  diligently follows the traditions and discipline of the old masters- his guru and his father and has devoted his life to becoming an Indian classical music vocalist. However, as the years go by, Sharad starts to wonder whether it’s really possible to achieve the excellence he’s striving for.
