With one blockbuster – Rohit Shetty’s Simmba – under his belt and another film touted to be no less, Ranveer Singh is on a professional high like never before. The trade is already predicting good things for his film Gully Boy and if they are proven right, then the film will mark Ranveer’s hat-trick hit at the box office. Post the Zoya Akhtar film, Ranveer will embark on the ambitious sports biopic 83, where he is set to play cricketer Kapil Dev. Personally too, he is in a beautiful space as Deepika Padukone’s husband. As we catch up with the star for an exclusive chat, he talks about his successful innings at the BO and about life post marriage.

First Padmaavat and then Simmba, 2018 has been a very good year for you with you rising to the top. But do you think it is unfair to make comparisons with seniors like Shah Rukh Khan and others?

You certainly cannot compare. What happened probably is they saw the angry young man in my character in the film and I am very proud of it. But you cannot compare me or Ranbir (Kapoor) to these stalwarts who have been leading the film industry for decades and have sustained their stardom through their commitment and hard-work. Their achievement is incomparable because they have sustained the eco system of the entire film industry for over two decades now. It is an achievement maybe nobody will be able to achieve. They are legendary figures and it is not correct to draw comparisons.

You have explored various facets to your personality through your roles. What is yet to be discovered?

I have never played a sportsman. And in my next film I am going to play an athlete so to live that life of discipline will be important.

So have you become disciplined now? After marriage with Deepika?

Yes, I have become much more disciplined now that I have got married. I go home on time, eat on time, sleep on time and I reach work on time. Main Kaafi sudhar gaya hoon. Marriage has had that positive effect on me and now that it has happened, I am very happy about it.

How was it working with Alia Bhatt?

She is a brilliant actor. She has a unique process and she is someone I find effortless. She glides through her work. She is serious, focused, disciplined, but makes it seem very casual.

She is a natural?

Absolutely, she is a born actor. She is full of soul. She has got emotional depth and understanding of human psyche and she picks up nuances that she brings into her performance. She is one of the finest actors I have worked with. I am happy and proud that Gully Boy is our first collaboration. It is a special film and I hope that going forward we will do more movies together. I just hope this is the first of the many and we are doing Takht together, but that’s a family drama. I hope we do an epic romance or some kind of romance that will be nice to explore that.

At a time when people are talking about content-driven films working as against the regular mainstream big budget films, – Simmba came and demolished that perception?

I have not seen the big budget films that you are referring to. I can’t comment on why those didn’t work, I can only speak for Simmba and the film gave the audience a total entertainment package. We are very proud that it is not a film that just became commercially successful. It has got a lot of love most significantly and it was also a reviewed film and you can’t say the same for films in this genre.

I think it was Rohit’s highest grossing and best reviewed film and the TRPs are going to be insane once it is shown on TV. Like Karan (Johar) says it is Rohit sir’s most-assured work.I am happy that I could make some creative value-addition. It’s almost as though when we decided to collaborate with each other it is going to be a lethal combination — dynamite together. His cinema calls for an actor like me – the kind of actor and the person that I am belongs in that cinema.
