Hasti DoshiWhile everyone celebrated Doctor’s day worldwide, we here remember a few doctors from reel life who made an impact on their audiences. Bollywood has seen all kinds of portrayals of medical professionals. Be it Sanjay Dutt as Munna Bhai to Kareena Kapoor Khan in 3 Idiots to Shahid Kapoor as Kabir Singh. The role of the doctor isn’t easy to replicate. As yesterday was World Doctor’s Day let’s recall the most iconic doctor characters we’ve seen on the big screen.
Munna Bhai
Talking about the doctors of Bollywood who have left an impression on us, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. surely tops this list. Sanjay Dutt has played the character of Munna Bhai which is counted among the most iconic roles of his career. This film has some real doctors who try to treat patients in their regular boring style, but Munna has his own swag. Even though he can’t pass M.B.B.S. on his own but he has some heartwarming ways to treat people with kindness and affection which touched every member of the audience. Munna Bhai and Circuit is one of the most iconic jodis of Hindi Cinema.
Kabir Singh
Kabir Singh the latest blockbuster film is currently in the news for Shahid Kapoor’s character in the film. He is playing the role of a drunken doctor and the story is based on his romance. But this doctor has offended many real doctors from the real world. However apart from the controversies surrounding the film, if we look at the character that is deeply in love and has anger issues, then this is something which we haven’t seen in any other doctor roles created for the screen. Nevertheless, Kabir Singh is running successfully in theatres and fans are in love with Kabir. Let us know what your thoughts are on this controversial doctor.
Anand
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s all-time classic Anand features Rajesh Khanna in the title role of Anand, a patient suffering from a fatal illness. But the film is equally remembered for the character of Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee, more popularly known as Babu Moshai, played by Amitabh Bachchan. This film has made many generations of audiences cry, and remains high on lists of the greatest films made in Bollywood.
Ek Doctor Ki Maut
This is a serious film, part of the Art film movement. It features Pankaj Kapur in one of the best roles of his career as Dr. Dipankar Roy, who dedicates his entire life to researching diseases and searching for their cure. Here is a doctor who at a young age, discovers a medicine that has the potential to treat a chronic disease, and he is rewarded for this discovery as well – although internationally. But the bureaucratic system strikes back at him and posts him to a remote village. His wife, played by the very talented Shabana Azmi remains his steadfast supporter.
3 Idiots
Considered by many to be one of the best films made in India, 3 Idiots is set in an Engineering college. But Dr. Pia played by Kareena Kapoor Khan made us fall in love with the character of a medical student. When this doctor-in-the-making meets Aamir Khan’s character (Rancho in the film) her outlook to life changes and she falls in love with him. From the Hippocratic Oath to a child delivered by using a vacuum cleaner, this film had many medical references.
These were a few of the many on-screen doctors who have entertained us and we can’t forget their roles for the longest time. We thank all the doctors on this day for saving our lives. Stay tuned to CineBlitz for more updates on Bollywood.
