Recently, producer Ronnie Screwvala had sent legal notices to various multiplexes about a visual print fee that’s being charged by the theatres for showcasing the digital posters of films. Today, the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) has come out in support of the producer and has issued an official statement about the same. Read below to know more.
Almost two weeks ago, Ronnie had issued legal notices against various multiplexes like PVR, INOX, Cinepolis, Carnival Motion Pictures and FICCI Multiplex Association of India. The notice was issued to the theatres for charging a visual print fee to display digital posters of films. Since Ronnie felt the fee was not justified, through a legal firm he wrote to the CCI (Competition Commission of India) about how the multiplexes are charging filmmakers a sum of Rs 20,000 per film, per theatre. In his argument, the producer also stated that installing digital projectors and servers are a one time cost and thus charging filmmakers for every film is unfair.
Today, the IMPPA came ahead in support of the producer and have issued a notice about the same. According to the statement issued by IMPPA on March 28, the association appreciates the efforts of Ronnie Screwvala in saving the film producers from the exploitative policies of multiplexes. The association also feels that Ronnie has raised an apt issue and it needs to be tackled ASAP. The IMPPA notice also talks about the excessive screening of advertising commercials and a few other reasons for the profits falling short. Signed by Secretary of IMPPA, Anil Nagrath, the notice says, “We have been directed to inform you that IMPPA fully supports you in your battle for justice for film producers and it will be our pleasure to provide any kind of support and help to you in this great step taken by you.”
