# Kalank Controversies

Initially, Kalank was supposed to be directed by Karan Johar and his late father Yash Johar was going to produce it. In fact, the pre-production work had also begun and Yashji scouted places for the shoot too. However, the film ended up getting shelved after KJo’s father passed away. Karan had mentioned how he couldn’t gather the courage to make the film and hence, he passed it on to Abhishek Varman, who nurtured it well.

The first controversy that Kalank faced was accusations of plagiarism. As soon as the teaser dropped, a Twitter user pointed out how the background score was ripped off from a popular Television series, The Flash. But composer Sanchit Balhara quashed these accusations with his post on Facebook that read, “Let me inform you, what you and some other people are referring to ‘copied’ is a basic music technique called arpeggios. When an arpeggio is played by an orchestra, it’s supposed to sound very similar to your mentioned original music of ‘Flash’. And if you consider that ‘copying’ then I would request you to start listening to composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky to find how commonly this technique is used in classical music and film scores.”

Kalank makers were also accused of copying the story of a novel and movie going by the name of What the Body Remembers. There were several uncanny resemblances. However, Varun Dhawan denied the allegations and mentioned how he hasn’t read the book. He further revealed that that Kalank is a love story with multiple layers, most of which are not in the trailer. The actor further added that if the makers were trying to copy or adapt a movie or book, they would have tried to hide it by changing the character names. The actor also added that people should watch the movie and only then jump to conclusions!

Hardik Pandya – KL Rahul fined Rs 20 lakh each for their sexist comments on Karan Johar’s show

Fine imposed on Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul by the Supreme Court-appointed BCCI Ombudsman DK Jain

Karan Johar talks about Hardik pandya controversy on Arbaaz Khans show Pinch

After making some controversial and sexist statements on Koffee with Karan, Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul faced a lot of public flak, that also resulted in them being suspended from the cricket team for a brief period of time. The suspension was later lifted owing to a pending inquiry by the Ombudsman appointed by the Supreme Court. Hardik had earlier apologized for his misogynistic comments on Twitter, but, of course, it fell on deaf ears.

Anyway, now the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took a serious step by slapping both the cricketers with a fine of Rs. 20 lakh each. The two players have been strictly instructed by the BCCI Ombudsman D K Jain to pay Rs. 1 lakh to each of the 10 families of the jawans who lost their lives serving the country. Apart from this, D K Jain has also ordered the cricketers to deposit Rs. 10 lakh each in the fund created by the Cricket Association for the blind. All payments are to be made within four weeks from the date of the order, i.e. April 19, 2019.

Post the incident, KWK host Karan Johar did appear on multiple platforms, saying that two have already paid their price and that he somehow feels responsible for the controversy. But, clearly, that wasn’t priced enough and this new step by the BCCI would hopefully set an example for one and all. Stay tuned to CineBlitz for more such updates.

Mental Hai Kya controversy: Makers issue statement after Indian Psychiatric Society questions their title

Kangana Ranaut – Rajkummar Rao’s Mental Hai Kya ran into fresh trouble after the Indian Psychiatric Society pointed out that the film title sounded derogatory

Published at

Mental hai kya

It was yesterday (April 19) that the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) wrote to the Central Board of Film Certification, Ministry of Information and Technology, as well as the Prime Minister’s office regarding the title of the film Mental Hai Kya. According to the IPS, the title comes under: ‘discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons.’ Today (April 20) the makers of the Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut starrer have issued a notice to try to clear the air around the project.

The new poster of the film Mental Hai Kya got a good response from the audience, but it didn’t go down well with the IPS. According to them, the title is derogatory to people fighting with mental health. The makers have issued a statement saying the film is based on fictional characters and does not intent to offend or discriminate against any one. The makers believe that the film will encourage people to embrace their individuality and distinctiveness. We also exclusively informed you that the IPS will be interacting with the media today regarding the same. The film is set to release on June 21. The complete statement is attached below:

“A day after the launch of the poster of the upcoming film Mental Hai Kya starring Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao in the lead, a certain section of the society has taken offense to it. They have felt that the title of the movie is discriminating against people who are battling mental issues.

On the contrary, the makers of the film, believe that their movie – Mental Hai Kya will encourage people to embrace their individuality and distinctiveness.

Produced by Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Balaji Motion Pictures’, Mental Hai Kya starring Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao marks the coming together of some of the most talented and responsible media personalities, who in no way intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

The makers would like to maintain that Mental Hai Kya is a fictional thriller genre feature film meant to entertain audiences and it does not offend, discriminate or disregard any person. In fact the film is a mainstream entertainer which makes a larger point.”

Well, wonder what the IPS have to say about this now. Stay tuned to CineBlitz for more updates.

Kangana Ranaut’s Mental Hai Kya runs into major trouble – read details

After a delay in release, Kangana Ranaut – Rajkummar Rao’s Mental Hai Kya has run into trouble with some people and here’s everything you need to know

Published at

Mental Hai Kya shifted to a may release

Kangana Ranaut is one person who can’t catch a breath without being caught up in some kind of controversy. The Queen actress has now found herself in deep waters and no it’s not because of something she has personally said or done, but because of her new film titled – Mental Hai Kya that also stars Rajkummar Rao as the male lead. Directed by National Award director Prakash Kavelamundi, the film’s poster released last week. The film is now set to release on June 21. However, looks like there may be a serious issue knocking on the door for Mental Hai Kya after the Indian Psychiatric Society is demanding that the makers change the title of the film as it is discriminating and stigmatising for those suffering from mental issues.

The Indian Psychiatric Soceity (IPS) has written to the Central Board of Film and Certification (CBFC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as well as to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) calling out the title of the movie “discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons” The IPS is raising serious objections to the title and have asked the authorities to remove the title and additionally censor scenes that may violate the people suffering from mental disorders. Mental health is still a taboo conversation in our country, so it is understandable where this concern stems from. The IPS is taking this matter seriously and they have even threatened to file a Public Interest Litigation if their demands are not met.

The statement issued by the IPS read: “We strongly demand that the title be removed with immediate effect preventing further damage to the modesty of mental health service users. We also demand to censor any sequence in the movie that is violating the rights of persons with mental disorder.”  Dr Sagar Karia from the Bombay Psychiatric Society also took to Twitter saying: “The way the promo of the film portrays the persons with mental illness is very wrong. It appears as though they are making fun of those suffering from illnesses, which is irresponsible.”

Well, let’s see what the makers have to say about this. Keep following CineBlitz for all the latest updates from Bollywood.
