Happy Women’s Day to all the women out there who sail through rough waters and fight tough battles of life day-in-day-out. The Hindi film industry has, over the past years, been very vocal about the issues that women go through, right from making films about them to voicing them out on social media. It has brought about a welcome change in the way women are perceived not just in the industry but even in society. On this special day, B-town celebs have expressed their love and appreciation for entire womenfolk. Bollywood stars like Twinkle Khanna, Sonam Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Shamita Shetty, Katrina Kaif and Disha Patani have come out on social media to celebrate this special day.

Be it Toilet: Ek Prem Katha or Padman, we’ve loved how Akshay Kumar has evolved into a torchbearer for women’s rights in recent years. We wonder if his wife Twinkle Khanna is the reason behind his choice of meaningful films about women welfare. Apart from Akshay, Manikarnika star Kangana Ranaut also spoke about women empowerment saying, “We don’t need to empower them. They are powerful, and they are the very reason why humanity and the human race exists. How can we empower them? We just don’t need to suppress them, that’s all…we need to recognise their subtle, sophisticated and superior strength and respect that. Rani Laxmibai was a firm believer of women and their power, and she utilised it to the fullest.” Check out their posts:

Ever since I was a little girl, I always had my nose buried in books. Books were my escape, they were my solace. I would run away to have tea with Alice in Wonderland, hop from one ink-stained asteroid to another with the Little Prince. I even reached Mars with Philip K Dick, decades before the Mars Orbiter Mission. When I finished 12th grade, being rather academically inclined, I wanted to study to be an accountant. My parents though were both in the entertainment industry and were keen that I follow in their footsteps. Like many young people I caved in and joined the family business. Eight years later, I had to face the fact that I had spectacularly failed as an actress. I went through a brief period of despair, till I realized that having failed at something did not mean I was a failure, it just meant that I now had the opportunity to try and succeed at myriad other things. I decided to cut my losses not my wrists and went back to working around all the things I had always loved. Somewhere along that path, I found my place in the world of words, a place where I could finally thrive surrounded by my beloved books, both as a reader and now as a writer as well. If my journey has taught me one valuable lesson then it is the importance of being resilient. This is something I try and inculcate in my kids as well. I tell them and perhaps also end up reminding myself that life is just like flying a kite. Sometimes you have to leave it loose, sometimes you have to hold on tight, sometimes your kite will fly effortlessly, sometimes you will not be able to control it and even when you are struggling to keep it afloat and the string is cutting into your hand, don't let go. The wind will change in your favour once again. Just don't let go. #KohlerBoldStories #PechaKucha #WomensDay #Kohler

I read something really nice and wanted to share with all of you: If we must celebrate a day for women, let us celebrate freedom from stereotypes, from expectations, from idolization, from sacrifice… Stop congratulating women for being the secret behind a successful man… Start saluting them for being successful. Stop saying the mother is sacred for all the sacrifices she makes… Try to reduce those sacrifices! Stop telling women they are beautiful… Try telling them it's not important to be beautiful! Stop praising her roles as mother, wife, daughter, sister… Celebrate her as an individual, a person, independent of relationships. Stop justifying her necessity to multi task….Give her a chance not to! Stop these constructs which are aimed at making her strive for an impossible balance… Let her be inadequate… And happy! Stop making her look at herself through a conveniently male viewpoint. Let her be imperfect, whimsical, irresponsible, boorish, lazy, fierce, opinionated, loud, flabby, ungroomed, adventurous, unpredictable, unprepared, impractical… Well behaved women rarely make HISTORY! HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY TO ALL MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS!

Films like Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Queen, Chak De India!, Mardaani, Kahaani, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Padman and many more have highlighted the importance of women empowerment and urged us to celebrate women from all walks of life. Last year, Tanushree Dutta brought the #Metoo movement to Bollywood that gave a platform and courage for all those who have not been able to come forward against sexual harassment because of the fear of being shunned away. Many women poured their hearts out and shared their horror stories which were devastating to hear, but they created a dialogue on sexual misconduct prevalent in film sets, offices and workplaces. We applaud every woman and every girl who is trying to find her place in this broken society.
