Deepika Padukone’s transformation as acid attack survivor Malti in Chhapaak has already been winning the star much praise. But it’s not the first time that we have seen a Bollywood actress abandon her glamorous look to opt and play some courageous characters on screen. Here’s taking a look at some of these actresses who’ve fearlessly embraced some of the boldest transformations on screen
Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978)
Probably one of the first ones to undergo a transformation for her screen character was Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. She played a village girl, Rupa, who in a domestic accident, ends up with a half-scarred face after hot oil spills on her. There were other actresses like Hema Malini, Dimple Kapadia and Vidya Sinha who had turned down the role because of the look that they were required to sport as well as the sensual content in the film. Raj Kapoor had mentioned that he had Lata Mangeshkar in mind when he wrote the film.
Rekha in Khoon Bhari Maang (1988)
Rakesh Roshan had redefined cinema diktats with Khoon Bhari Maang proving that a female lead could be the main protagonist of a mainstream superhit film. Rekha played Aarti, a very ordinary woman who has a huge birth mark on her face. She is married to Kabir Bedi, who in his greed for her wealth, pushes her out of the boat in a river infested with crocodiles. She survives but face is disfigured. Rekha was at the peak of her career when she took up the challenge to play the role of a woman who returns with a vengence to take revenge. There have been reports about Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha wanting to play Rekha’s role in the remake of the film.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Barfi (2012)
Priyanka was highly appreciated for her performance in Barfi in which she played an autistic girl. A role probably not many actresses would want to take up only because the physical appearance is below ordinary. This one is definitely one of the most daring roles played by this actress, who has now made a name for herself in Hollywood too.
Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015)
Kangana has always been playing characters that have been risky and one such role was in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which required her to sport a very non-glamorous, unconventional look as Kusum Sangwan aka Datto. Kangana had several look tests and had to try out 10 dentures before she finalised one for the role of Datto which was completely opposite of the glamorous Tanu.
Deepika Padukone in Chhapaak (2019)
Just after her super-duper hit Padmaavat, Deepika Padukone had gone ahead and signed a film playing the role of an acid attack survivor that required her to shed her glamorous image. Her look of the character Malti is inspired from the life of Laxmi Agarwal who was attacked by a 32-year-old man, when she was just 15. Today Laxmi is the voice of all acid attack survivors and fighting a case to stop sale of acid.
