Rima Das’s Bulbul Can Sing wins at Dublin and Cleveland International Film Festivals

Acclaimed director Rima Das has been in the headlines since last year thanks to her prolific film, Village Rockstars. She is garnering media attention yet again with her recent film Bulbul Can Sing that has won big at the Dublin International Film Festival as well as at the Cleveland International Film Festival. The film received the Best Director award at Dublin and the Someone to Watch award at Cleveland. The film had its World Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2018, followed by the South Asian Premiere at Busan International Film Festival. Indian Premiere of Bulbul Can Sing at the 20th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival was also special as it won the Golden Gateway Award in the India Gold competition category. That’s not all. The film received high praise at its European Premiere at Berlin International Film Festival. When quizzed about the film’s stellar run at international film festivals, Rima Das said, “Both Village Rockstars and Bulbul Can Sing have strong women characters at its centre. It’s wonderful that the critics and audiences alike are very receptive to such stories. It also goes on to reiterate that it doesn’t matter whether the film is helmed by a male or female filmmaker. I strongly believe that ‘Content is Queen’ and I would like to see more and more women in the industry make a name for themselves and open windows for fellow women in the process.”

This is Rima Das’ third Assamese film and the second to bag accolades all around the globe. Previously, her film, Village Rockstars, was shortlisted for the Oscars 2019 and now it seems like history is repeating itself with Bulbul Can Sing.
