A four-time Grammy winner, an American actor, rapper, and producer Willard Carroll Smith Jr., aka Will Smith, recently launched his memoir Will . The memoir is available on Audible, the leading creator and provider of premium audio storytelling. In this audiobook, Will Smith shares some lesser-known facts about his (complicated) relationships with his parents, Jada Pinket Smith and ex-wife, Sheree Zampino.

A complicated father-son relationship

“I was afraid of my father. When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of her head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood. That moment, in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am today.”

In his memoir, Will Smith talks at length about his unusual relationship with his father. Even though Willard Carroll Smith, Sr., a.k.a Daddy O, had anger issues and was drunkard, Will mentions that his father taught him some important life lessons. In his words, “My father tormented me, but he was also the greatest man that I have ever known.” Will adds, even with the complications, his father ensured that his family had bread on the table each day and was always present. “My father was violent, but he was also at every game, play and recital. He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premier of every one of my movies.”

Will talks about his mum mum

“Knowledge would be the only thing that the world couldn’t take away from you and she only cared about three things: Education. Education and Education”

While Will Smith’s relationship with his father was complicated, he shared a unique bond with his mother, Caroline Bright, a.ka. mum mum. In his memoir, Smith mentions how his mother was “eloquent and sophisticated” and always focused on educating herself and her kids from the beginning. “She (Caroline Bright) loved business. Banking, Finance, Sales & Contracts.” While talking about his mother as a strong independent woman, Smith says, “By 25, as a struggling single mom, she was probably one of the most educated African-American women in Pittsburgh.” A strong pillar in Will’s life, Caroline is his favourite person in the family.

Fun Fact: Will Smith’s parents (Caroline Bright and Willard Carroll Smith) were married once before marrying each other and the two had a daughter from their first marriage, coincidently named ‘Pam.’

On his ex-wife, Sheree Zampino

“Sheree said that I wasn’t in love with her, I was in love with the idea of her. What I believe a wife should be like. Anybody could be her, she once said. Sheree used to call herself my placeholder wife. The woman who was supposed to check the box of ‘Wife’ in Will Smith’s life.”

Will Smith had a few relationships that were close to his heart, but each of them took a rough path and ended. His marriage with Sheree Zampino too came to an end in 1995. Recalling his divorce, Smith says, “It sucks getting divorce papers. It is a publicly filed declaration that you are an unlovable piece of shit.” He adds, “The funny part is that I got my papers on February 14th (Valentine’s Day).” He says, “The lowest point in my life was my parents’ separation, but this (divorce with Sheree) was like I was repeating the cycle. I was in denial.” He adds, “I would have never gotten married if I thought divorce was an option.”

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith

“We drank every day and had sex multiple times every day for four straight months. I started to wonder if this was a competition.”

Will Smith in his audiobook mentions that the first couple of months with Jada Pinkett (now his wife) transformed him. They fit together so naturally, and their energies combined exponentially in a way that they were like old friends rather than new lovers. His divorce from Sheree wasn’t yet final so Jada and Will decided to keep their relationship under wraps. They both were getting pretty famous and thought it just wouldn’t be good luck. They spent every single moment together with each other and the first 3-4 months were as wild and romantic as our bodies could have possibly handled. They travelled to exotic, secret getaways, discovered private air travel and checked in under aliases.
