Every year there are films that release around the festival of Holi and we have even seen special songs and scenes dedicated to the festival. The festival of colours spreads a lot of joy and love, and we get to see the same in movies. Be it songs like Balam Pichkari or Holi Khele Raghuveera, B-town has given us some of the best Holi numbers to add to our playlist. As we hum these songs there have been films too which did excellent in terms of their content and also numbers. For two consecutive years, Varun Dhawan has ruled the Holi dates.

This Holi, we have Kesari hitting the theatres, which stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles. The film will release on March 21 and we’re excited to see how it performs at the box office. Every year, there are films that release around Holi and while some pass with big numbers, some fail miserably.

Let’s take a look at the last few years of Holi releases and the audience response they received…

Bewakoofiyaan

Released on March 14, 2014, the film starred Ayushmann Khurana, Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor in lead roles. It is a romantic comedy directed by Nupur Asthana. The film didn’t do well at the box office and neither did it receive much critical acclamation. This film received a nay from the audience even though it was a good rom-com.

Kapoor and Sons

Released on March 8, 2016, this film was a multi-starrer drama. It made everyone laugh and cry, and was quite an enjoyable watch. It was a hit film that earned 152 Crores while the movie’s budget was 35 Crores. The movie starred Rishi Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Fawad Khan. This Holi release certainly deserves a thumbs up.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

The film released on March 10, 2017, and added joy to our Holi with its music and love story. The movie had the perfect balance of love, emotions and comedy. It earned 202 Crores, thus ticking itself as a hit film of the year. Rarely have Holi-released movies done well at the box-office, but this movie certainly begged to differ.

Pari

This supernatural horror film starring Anushka Sharma as the lead made 40 Crores at the box office. The film released on March 2 last year. This horror film was critically acclaimed and Anushka was seen playing the role of a supernatural being, which was surprising yet convincing. It was made under the banner of Clean Slate productions, which is Anushka Sharma’s home production.

Veerey Ki Wedding

This romantic comedy starring Pulkit Samrat, Kriti Kharbanda and Jimmy Shergill in the lead came out in theatres on March 2 last year. Directed by Ashu Trikha, Veery Ki Wedding neither impressed the critics nor the masses. And hence the film failed to get cash registers ringing at the ticket windows in India. In fact, Pulkit starrer came and went away without making any sort of noise.
