We were among the first ones to tell you how Deepika Padukone could be a part of hubby Ranveer Singh’s ’83. And now it can finally be confirmed! Yes, there’s good news for the fans of the couple, as Deepika has been confirmed to play Ranveer Singh’s wife onscreen. So, while Ranveer Singh essays the role of Indian Cricket team’s former captain Kapil Dev, wife Deepika Padukone will be seen in the role of Kapil Dev’s wife Roma Dev. While there was buzz that she may be co-producing the film, there’s no truth to that, though Ranveer has a stake in the project like most stars do.

’83 will mark the couple’s first outing together on the big screen after their wedding last year (2018). The couple was last seen together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 magnum opus Padmaavat. Now, CineBlitz has exclusively learnt that Deepika will be playing Ranveer’s screen wife in Kabir Khan’s film that’s based on Indian cricket team’s historic 1983 World Cup victory at the Lords Cricket Grounds, England.

But that’s not all. We also have the real reason why Deepika has agreed to doing this role and it’s not just working with husband Ranveer Singh. While Deepika had been contemplating the role, what locked the deal for her was the fact that she did not want to let go of a chance to be a part of a film that captured on celluloid such a historic moment that made the entire country proud. The draw was the strong emotional connect as a proud Indian, say insiders.

Interestingly, Roma Dev herself had missed watching the final crucial moments of India’s historic win at Lords in 1983. She had in a show revealed that she had left the stadium between the match as she thought that the Indian team will lose and she didn’t want to look upset. Also she had revealed that with the West Indies hitting sixes and fours, the families of the players were teasing them and Roma found it embarrassing. So, it will be interesting to see how Deepika’s role will be played out especially in the crucial final scenes.

The film that recently saw Sajid Nadiadwala come onboard as a producer, is currently in pre-production with the star cast perfecting their cricketing moves guided by the real heroes of cricket including Kapil Dev himself.
