Nivedita Basu voices for stricter laws against rapists, abusers

The nation can never forget the Nirbhaya incident that happened in Delhi back in 2012. Recently, the brutal rape of a 30-year-old woman in Sakinaka, Mumbai, again shocked the country and reminded us of the Nirbhaya tragedy. It sparked an outrage all over the country and raised questions on women safety yet again. What shocked many is the fact that this happened in a city like Mumbai, which is considered safe for women. Writer, producer and director Nivedita Basu shares the same opinion.

“The Nirbhaya case was obviously a testimonial that north India is known to be unsafe for women. But when I heard about the Sakinaka case I was in shock because Mumbai has been so safe for girls. It’s very disturbing,” she says.

She adds that it’s high time that rules in India need to get stricter against such crimes. “There should not be a hearing or anything. These criminals should just be given death penalty. Some still dare to commit such heinous crimes because they know that they can get away with it. I just hope that justice is brought and these kinds of things at least don’t happen in Maharashtra again,” says the director of the web series Tandoor.

Expressing further disgust and voicing for justice, Nivedita adds, “Of course we are angry and upset because many women are employed in lines of work that require them to do late nights, so should they stop working? I am also a part of one such field of work. We never really thought of any safety issues while coming back home earlier, but now we are worried and scared, so are our families.”
