Henna BrarJohn Abraham’s film Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW) has hit the screens and created quite a buzz among the masses. Many spy thrillers have come our way in recent times and they’ve been a part of Indian cinema as long as we can remember. Spy thriller is one of the most enjoyed genres in cinema. While this genre was not particularly well catered to earlier, recently there has been a dramatic evolution of this genre. With more films in the spy thriller segment coming out with really intense scripts, good casting and some real-life sensibility, it has made spy thrillers much more enjoyable to watch. While the over-dramatic and pushy representation of this genre is out, audiences have been treated to some really good films in the recent past. We bring to you the films that we’ve enjoyed from the spy thriller genre.
Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW)
John Abraham who plays Romeo gets recruited while working in a bank, and then goes on to become an undercover agent. The storyline is set during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
Raazi
Alia Bhatt plays a young Sehmat Khan who is an undercover RAW agent. She gets married into a Pakistani family so that she can spy on them and retrieve valuable intel. It was one of the most thrilling movies that came out in 2018.
Baby
Baby was one of the best Bollywood films of 2015, directed by Neeraj Pandey. It starred Akshay Kumar, Tapsee Pannu, Rana Daggubati, Danny Denzongpa in the lead roles. The film follows the journey of a spy’s personal life and also shows us how they deal with terrorists and plan covert operations in other countries.
Agent Vinod & Phantom
Agent Vinod is an action spy movie starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan that released in 2012. The movie revolves around a secret agent whose mission is to solve a high profile kidnapping case. The plot thickens when terror strikes and unfolds an even bigger conspiracy. Saif also featured in another spy film with Katrina Kaif, titled Phantom.
D-Day (2013)
D-Day is a spy thriller film directed by Nikhil Advani. The film followed the story of a team of secret agents who had to devise a plan to bring back India’s MOST WANTED criminal. However, there is an error in the plan and that’s the twist.
Ek Tha Tiger & Tiger Zinda Hai
This super successful romantic movie featuring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif is a full-on masala spy film. Salman plays a RAW agent who is sent to Dublin to observe a suspect overseas. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Zoya played by Katrina Kaif.
Madras Café
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Madras Café featured John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri. John plays an Indian intelligence agent who is on a secret mission in Sri Lanka. While he is there, he gets stuck in the middle of a civil war and a conspiracy to kill the former PM of India. This one was a really good watch!
While these are some of the more recent spy thrillers, spy films have been a part of Bollywood for a long time. Sunny Deol in Hero: The Story of a spy, Kamal Haasan in the masterpiece Vishwaroopam, Dev Anand’s CID, Mission Istanbul, and Dus are only some of the spy movies that we have watched over the years.
