Bollywood is a tough turf to manoeuvre for outsiders and star kids have it relatively easy. Kangana Ranaut, who is known to speak her mind, brought this conversation to the forefront with her controversial statements on Koffee with Karan in 2017. On the show she called Karan Johar the flag bearer of nepotism, when asked on her views on the topic. All hell broke hell lose, as what was small chitter chatter behind closed doors,  was now front page headlines in all homes, colleges, publications and the Bollywood industry. Everyone was talking about it! Recently an interview aired with the young debutants of 2018 – Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Radhika Madan, Zoya Hussain and Ishan Khatter. During the interview a lot of topics were touched upon, but when NEPOTISM was discussed, it generated a lot of interest.

The young stars were asked about their views on nepotism, especially relevant, considering there were 3 star kids on that table. The young stars were asked – How conscious are you of the privilege you have and if you believe in any responsibility of being in such privileged position. Janhvi looked excited, almost jumping out of her chair as she clearly had strong views. She began by saying she is blessed to be in this position and needs to work doubly harder to prove herself to people who may think she has robbed them of opportunities. She went on to say that maybe she wouldn’t have gotten Dhadak if she wasn’t who she is. But at the same time she wanted it so badly that she would have been a fool to miss out on such an opportunity.

Sara totally agreed with Janhvi, and admitted that she signed Simmba and Kedarnath so early on, only because of her privileged status. She added that star kids or not, it’s the Friday which is the ultimate deciding factor on whether the audience likes your work. Both admitted that access to the industry bigwigs is key and they are privileged to have such access from the time they are growing up.

Zoya Hussain of Mukkabaaz fame who was an outsider to the industry voiced her opinion on the matter. Without holding back she said that the battle to make it in Bollywood starts at a very basic level and that it’s a struggle for young dreamers who come from all over the country to Bombay, a struggle to pay rent and bills just to survive.  She shared her story of how it took her a couple of years to figure how to go about things, as she didn’t know anyone in the industry. It took her 5 years to get on the same level as the star kids sitting beside her and to get equal access.

It felt good to know that all the young kids, no matter which side of the coin they represent, are aware of the privileges, opportunities and struggles that the other side face. And what finally counts is the quality of work – because that’s what dictates whether you survive and thrive in showbiz. For latest Bollywood news and gossip follow and subscribe to Cine Blitz.
