The first quarter of 2019 has been fantastic for Bollywood. With several hits like Uri: The Surgical Strike, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Total Dhamaal, Luka Chuppi, Badla, Kesari, the Hindi film industry had a great start. It amassed nearly Rs 1000 crore at the box office in the first quarter of 2019, giving the industry one of the best start to the year. However, the second quarter is even more exciting. With some huge films up for release, as well as the summer vacations kicking in, it is going to be an interesting phase. But there is a lot riding on them too! In fact, if you look closely, you will realise that Rs 750 crore is riding on the films in the second quarter of 2019!
However, our trade expert – Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor) feels that all the movies will be money spinners at the box office. As he reveals to us exclusively, “It is a really interesting quarter. In fact, there are multiple events happening all together, which will certainly divert some degree of the audience. The Lok Sabha Elections are there, then there’s IPL (Indian Premier League), then the Cricket World Cup, all during the second quarter of 2019. All of these will have an impact on Bollywood and its business. This is because all these are things that keep the nation busy or at least their attention diverted. So they will have an impact, but having said that, there are several films that can still do pretty well. That will certainly generate number and get the money into the industry.”
