As biopics gain prominence in Hindi film industry, we love each and everyone that is being made. The one that is currently in talks is The Tashkent Files directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri. The film revolves around the mysterious death of the second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, it stars Mithun Chakraborty, Naseeruddin Shah, Shweta Basu Prasad, Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, Pallavi Joshi, Prashant Gupta, Ankur Rathee, Prakash Belawadi and Mandira Bedi. It’s reported that in the film Mithun plays Shyam Sundar Tripathi, who was the leader of the opposition party. The first look was recently released. Sporting long white hair, Mithun looks quite serious in the poster.
Director Vivek Agnihotri tweeted about the film saying, “On this day, 10th Jan 1966, in Tashkent a tiny man called Lal Bahadur Shashtri who won a war with Pakistan, soon after a humiliating defeat with China, signed the Tashkent treaty. Hours later he died. A death mystery unsolved to date. Why? On this day, our 2nd PM Lal Bahadur Shashtri died mysteriously in Tashkent. Was it a heart attack or poison? Even after 52 yrs, the truth of the biggest cover-up of free India has been denied to his family, followers, citizens. After years of research, I present #TheTashkentFiles.”

The then PM was in Tashkent, Uzbekistan where he signed an important Peace treaty on January 11, circa 1966. At night he mysteriously passed away due to a heart attack. Although many believe that the actual cause of death was not a heart attack. Shastriji’s family is adamant that he was poisoned and refuse to believe that he died of cardiac arrest. Shastriji’s wife especially thought that he’d died of poisoning.
The Tashkent Files releases on April 12 this year. Stay tuned to CineBlitz for news and updates.
