Bollywood and international film director Shekhar Kapur took to his Twitter to respond to a tweet that read “… What else do you need for a film to become one of the biggest ever? It will beat every Hindi film!” The BAFTA award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated director’s response insinuated that Bollywood has been forced to compete with Hollywood due to its narrow scope of films and cliche, cookie-cutter content. He implored Bollywood to look beyond songs and dances and to create films that can actually match the level of quality and uniqueness that the international movie industry caries. Bollywood needs to up its game. Its been taking audiences for granted for too long. And so opened the door to Hollywood. Now we have no choice but to compete with Hollywood. Shekhar Kapur himself has directed several critically acclaimed films, most memorably Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett and Richard Attenborough, and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, both of which went on to win Academy Awards. In Bollywood, he has helmed many films including Masoom, Bandit Queen and the iconic Mr. India.
